Title: Laser-based diagnostics: Low-concentration species in combustion and X-ray modulator development
Abstract
A significant part of combustion research nowadays pivots towards alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions. However, before any fuel can be used on an industrial level, it has to be characterized, and to proper characterization requires studies starting from the fundamental levels, such as chemical kinetics. For that, the measurements have to be performed non-intrusively, so that they do not affect the chemistry, in situ at high temperatures (up to 1800-2800 K, depending on the flame), often in confined spaces, at elevated pressures (up to 35 times the atmospheric one), and at small (generally nanosecond) time scales.
One thing that has been discovered to be up to the task is laser-based techniques: directing a laser beam through a medium (a flame, in this case) generates various kinds of spectroscopic responses that can then be converted to important flame data, such as temperature, burning velocity, or species concentrations, all of which are often challenging to obtain with other methods, considering that the flame environment is both hostile and very sensitive to any intrusions. Thus, in recent years, laser-based diagnostics have become rather widespread for combustion studies.
This seminar will focus on development of enhanced Raman Spectroscopy setup that enabled first-ever laser-based studies of harmful NOx species from NH3 combustion: NO and N2O, and also cover a couple of other studies related to the research of CH2O and H2. It will then be concluded with a brief description of the current project related to x-rays.
Biography
Dr Alsu Zubairova is a physicist with a background in the development of laser-based sensing methods. Her doctoral research focused on in situ studies of combustion chemistry of NH3 and other fuels, with the emphasis on quantification of low-concentration pollutants. Alsu has worked with UV-Vis-IR and THz light sources and is looking to learn more about X-rays for the new project (development of an X-ray modulator).
